TV Industry:

Summary:

This mockumentary goes behind the microphone of Kurupt FM - the second most popular pirate radio station in West London, receiving up to eight texts per show and playing the finest in UK garage and drum 'n' bass. Co-founded by the MC Sniper and DJ Beats in 2002, the station has now built up a following of over a hundred people and has attracted the attention of the BBC who are making a documentary about the lives of those behind Kurupt FM.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2241440/

Devised by a group of friends, the sitcom / mockumentary was inspired by The Office, Spinal Tap and Curb Your Enthusiasm - but especially (and appropriately) by a BBC Three documentary series, Tower Block Dreams, which explored the underground music scene in UK council estates.

The early webisodes of People Just Do Nothing - following the deluded crew of pirate radio station Kurupt FM, led by MC Grindah (Allan Mustafa) and DJ Beats (Hugo Chegwin) - were shot guerilla-style, with no budget and, for the most part, no scripts.
But these early amateur efforts generated a cult following and eventually attracted the attention of Roughcut TV's Ash Atalla, producer on The Office.

TV series success:

The show has received major success in feedback and critique of the group Kurupt FM. A very high mass majority of viewers very much pleased with the shows outcome.
Receiving:
A 8.6/10 rating on IMDB
A 4/5 rating from The Telegraph
It is clear of the shows success.

There has been to date no current released information on the shows success in terms of ratings and turnover but is evidently still popular even after the turn over of BBC Three to its online player.

Print media reviews:

This show has had a lot of media coverage based on its comedy success, a prime example of this would be that of the Guardian's shown below:

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/sep/22/how-people-just-do-nothing-made-sitcoms-funny-again

They claim

"While TV has been undergoing this existential crisis, there has been one programme plugging away at the lost art of making people laugh. The BBC’s scrappy mockumentary People Just Do Nothing, which follows a manchild-run garage radio station in Brentford, is not an old-fashioned sitcom by any stretch – it’s understated, meta and set in a niche subculture – but it is truly traditional in its comedy: beats are hit and joke quotas filled, scene in, scene out."

Target Audience:

The programme, being originally broadcasted on BBC Three, had a target audience of 18-30 year old viewers. The programme directly approaches the heavily popular theme of garage and grime, now bigger than ever, it is perfect timing for a show with such content. However BBC Three have now moved their entire channel and contents online using their app 'BBC Iplayer' which I dont believe has affected the target audience ads an iPlayer debut seems entirely appropriate for a show aimed directly at BBC Three’s 18-to-30-year-old target audience who, as the channel’s fate suggests, do most of their viewing online these days anyway.

Music Industry:

Garage & Grime Music Scene:

UK Grime is a genre of music which has been developing in London's underground since 2002. Grime's tempo is around 140 beats per minute. Style of flow also varies but its most common for rappers or MCs to "spit" double time or aggressively over the beat.

Grime can often be dark and aggressive, featuring MCs as opposed to singers and getting rid of the R&B influences of earlier the UK Garage music.
The success of uk grime has got a lot to do with the pirate radio scene in London, with many performers practicing their skills and getting an underground reputation before going 'mainstream'.

Before uk grime there was the uk garage music scene in the UK. But when certain producers and MCs started talking things to a new darker, harder and more aggressive level there was a clear split in the scene. Hence in around 2002 the term grime was born and since then the scene has grown and strengthened.

The Pay As You GO Cartel were arguably the first crew to make a name for themselves through pirate radio. The 'crew' mentallity meant that MCs would work in groups with just one or two DJs to develop a unique style together. The Pay As U Go was a crew from the East London. The Cartel had ten members aged between 19 and 23, with DJs Target, DJ Slimzee and Geeneus, and six MCs - Wiley, Major Ace, Plague, Gods Gift, Flow Dan, vocalist Dom P and Maxwell D.

The crew even had top 40 chart success in the UK in 2002 with 'Champagne Dance' which took them to a performance on Top Of The Pops. Don't forget to check out our classic uk grime mix CDs featuring the Pay As You Go Crew.

Since 2002 the crew culture has really taken off in London with now well known crews such as Roll Deep Crew, Nasty Crew, Ruff Sqwad, East Connection & More Fire Crew all recieveing some form of commercial success.

However there has only been one grime mc to really take their career to the next level - Dizzee Rascal. He began his MCing when he was 15 on pirate radio in East London and eventually joined the Roll Deep crew where he teamed up with Wiley who is now recognised as being one of the founding producers of the uk grime scene. After having an underground hit with 'I Luv U', Dizzee Rascal signed to XL Recordings and his debut album gained worldwide critical acclaim. Since then he has gone on to perform all over the world and is now working on his third album. Take a look at our classic uk grime mix cd featuring Wiley and Dizzee Rascal together.

With Dizzee Rascal paving the way, other MCs have gone on to sign record deals and release albums such as Wiley from Roll Deep and Kano from The Nasty Crew. But the current trend in the uk grime scene is for MCs and producers to release Mixtapes as well as the traditional appearances on the pirate radio circuit. Artists such as Tinchy Stryder, JME, Demon, Ghetto, Bruza and many more have released profesionally produced UK Grime Mixtapes.

More recently Grime and Garage have become very popular and a hit success all over the world.
As grime became more popular in the UK throughout the mid 2000s, it spread out of London to other big British cities. Birmingham, Nottingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Bristol and Manchester now have Grime MCs who are currently gaining major exposure in the scene and have featured on Lord Of The Mics, an annual DVD released by Boy Better Know's Jammer.

The national growth of the grime scene has also been evident with many grime artists playing on the urban music stages of the big summer festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, T in the Park and O2 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park. Dizzee Rascal played at all these events in the summer of 2008.

The largest scene outside of London is based in Birmingham and the wider Birmingham area. Some of the pioneers of grime in Birmingham include Mike Skinner of The Streets; Devilman, who gained notoriety after his clash with Skepta; Deadly, who formed the grime group N.O.D.B, the first grime group from Birmingham to feature on BBC Radio 1Xtra; and Mayhem, who is also a founding member of N.O.D.B, known for his bombastic sound and his 2012 feud with Wiley. Many Birmingham artists have had success outside of the Birmingham region in recent years. The fourth edition of Lady Leshurr's Queen's Speech freestyle has gained over 28 million views on YouTube as of May 2016.

Since Skepta and the Bloodline Crew spent a lot of time outside of London in Manchester, it has been considered one of the biggest scenes outside of London. By many London grime artists, such as Big Narstie, Manchester is praised for holding on to grime when many London artists attempted to make money in the pop scene around the 2007-2012 era With Bugzy Malone and his beef with artist Chip, Manchester has been propelled in to the mainstream of grime.

International Growth -

It was not until the release of his third album, 2007's Maths + English, that Dizzee Rascal experienced international acclaim. He was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize again, and despite the fact that the album was not released in the United States in 2007, it received high praise from international music critics, magazines, websites and blogs, including Pitchfork Media, Rolling Stone, and Rock Sound. By 2010, he had achieved three number one singles in a row.

The 2005 release of 679 Recordings' Run the Road compilation showcased some of the most popular grime releases to that point, increasing the popularity and fame of grime and grime artists internationally. A particularly notable grime artist who has had success overseas is Lady Sovereign, who appeared on Late Show with David Letterman, signed to Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records, and whose "Love Me or Hate Me" became the first video by a British artist to reach number one on MTV's Total Request Live, although her music has departed considerably from her early output on pirate radio stations, and she does not regard herself as a grime artist.

Following the string of hits in 2014, grime has become increasingly popular in North America. Skepta's collaborations with American rappers Ace Hood, Earl Sweatshirt, Drake and the Flatbush Zombies have made him one of grime's best-known names in the US. Grime has also spread to Australia, Japan and the Netherlands, which such acts as Tre Mission, Pakin, and Danny G Tha Saviour.

ITunes & Spotify:

The group have had success in selling their music from the series on iTunes. It can be found here - https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/heart-monitor-riddem-single/id1146884743

Although they only have one of their productions on their, this opens up more opportunity for success. Now, that song is online for you to listen to in full. The weird thing about Kurupt FM, right, is that their tracks actually good even though this whole thing is a total joke. Which makes for a slightly unnerving experience when you find yourself passionately screaming all the words to "Get Out The Way" at one of their live shows, like its Beyonce at the O2. "Heart Monitor Riddem" is another one for this category; a legitimate joke banger that can make you crease and rave all at once.

Similarly it is also available to listen to on a major platform known as 'Spotify'.

This is the groups only  professionally produced and released song available to listen to online and already brings them in over 11,000 monthly listeners and the song being played over 200,000 times.

Live Performances around UK and Abroad:

Their popularity and ruling under that of music demand at the moment has allowed the group to take their work on a more serious level to perform their music from the show and just portray their comedy and characters through similar music and a live audience.

Alongside their UK Tour the group was able to take their music and comedy out to Ibiza to play a set alongside some of the biggest artists known today.

Playing 4 events the group, working with the BBC, took the opportunity to make a mockumentary on their travels. You are able to quickly see the groups diverse split between professional music making and their acting, although it is all a joke putting it to the side they are serious about their music.

The stars of the BBC Three show, People Just Do Nothing – have also been touring their 'Champagne Steamrooms' gig up and down the country this past year, and last February, they concluded with a packed out homecoming show in North London's KOKO.

They took to the stage for nearly two hours and played 2-step classics, swigging cheap champagne in front of a sold out crowd of weeknight bed-by-12 ravers. From Chabuddy, aka "UKIP's Nightmare", building up the hype around a potential “very special guest”, only to then introduce himself as that guest, to DJ Steves hanging suspended from the rafters on a broken harness for the first ten minutes in silence, it was a car crash from start to finish, but in the most perfect way.

When Decoy stepped up to curate a dancehall and reggae section, it peaked with 1,500 people. They were joined by majorly popular grime idols in our time such as STORMZY, Big Narstie, D Double E and more. This idea shows that the group possesses a very similar target group and working with well known artists increases peoples awareness of the groups productions with the BBC and their own music. Say what you like about them being a BBC Three comedy show, but Steves can cut a mix like Mistajam, and Grindah and Beats know exactly how to get a room hyped.

Marketing & Advertising:

Print Marketing Strategies:

Print media strategies are still very much applicable to use despite our ability of online marketing strategies.

This includes:

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Billboards and Posters
  • Direct Mail
These all provide almost unavoidable advertising in peoples everyday lives which then brings their attention and appeal to the product being promoted. However the proliferation of digital media has led to a decline in advertising expenditure in traditional print media.

Online Marketing Strategies:

Online marketing includes a wider range of marketing elements than traditional business marketing due to the extra channels and marketing mechanisms available on the Internet.

Online marketing can deliver benefits such as:
  • Growth in potential
  • Reduced expenses
  • Elegant communications
  • Better control
  • Improved customer service
  • Competitive advantage

The Inbetweeners Movie:

Series summary: (1)

The exploits of four friends, who are socially only marginally above what one of them calls "the freaks", are presented as they grow from their late teen years into adults and as they go on their quest, usually unsuccessfully, for such grown up things as beer and sex. Simon Cooper, Jay Cartwright and Neil Sutherland have been friends for some time. Insecure Simon's main quest in life is to get long time friend, Carli D'Amato, to be his girlfriend. Jay is the big talker whose stories, especially about his sexual conquests, are more fantasy than reality. And slightly dim-witted Neil is generally two steps behind everyone else in comprehension of life, and who is always defending his father from beliefs that he's a closet homosexual. Into the group comes its fourth member, Will McKenzie, who met them when he transferred into their school, Rudge Park Comprehensive, at the start of sixth form, as Will's newly divorced mum could no longer afford his private school tuition. Nerdish and straight-laced Will, ridiculed for carrying a briefcase, insinuated himself in the group - not aiming his sights too high - as he tried not to be labelled as one of the freaks. Regardless, he is still the target of the school's "psycho bully", Mark Donovan, and the head of Rudge Park's sixth form, Mr. Gilbert. Will's initial saving grace in bonding with his new mates may have been that they all want to shag his pretty but protective mother, Polly.

Movie Summary:

Best friends Will McKenzie, Simon Cooper, Jay Cartwright and Neil Sutherland - who are not among the social outcasts, but also not cool enough to hang out with the cool kids who they aspire to be - have just graduated from their suburban London high school. Simon has finally been able to get Carli D'Amato, who he has been in love with since they were children, to be his girlfriend. Largely because they will be going away to different schools in the fall, Carli breaks up with him. To get Simon's singularly focused mind off Carli, his three best mates decide to take him on vacation for two weeks to get some sun, sand and girls before they move onto the next chapter of their lives in the fall. Neil makes the decision for them to go to Malia on the isle of Crete, a popular summer tourist destination for many a Brit. Jay, with inheritance money in hand, believes he can have the pick of any girl he wants. Neil has to decide what constitutes not cheating on his girlfriend, Nicole. Will wants to add a bit of culture into the vacation. And Simon still pines for Carli, getting her off his mind being more difficult when he learns why Neil chose Malia. What starts off as a disastrous vacation has the potential to pick up when they meet fellow Brits Alison, Lucy, Jane and Lisa, who pair up with Will, Simon, Jay and Neil respectively, and with who they hang, out of circumstance, for much of their time in Malia. Will the virgin, who generally makes Alison laugh, has no chance with her as she is far out of his league, and as she is already in a serious relationship with a Greek waiter named Nicos. Jay is ashamed to be seen with self-assured Jane, because she is overweight. Neil treats Lisa like any other female with who he wants to have non-cheating "sex". And Simon may not see that Lucy really does like him despite his singular focus on Carli. All these issues are placed against the backdrop of the guys trying to get tickets for the all-day boat cruise, seen as the party of the season, and at which all their dreams - at least in their dreams - will come true.

Movie Success: (3)

On its first day of release, The Inbetweeners Movie grossed over £2.5 million in 409 cinemas. The film then went on to set a new record for the most successful opening weekend ever achieved by a comedy film in the UK, overtaking Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and The Hangover Part II after earning £13.22 million, compared to second-place Rise of the Planet of the Apes which took £2.4 million. The Inbetweeners Movie was confirmed as having the biggest opening weekend for an independent British film. It retained its number 1 position in the UK film charts for four weeks before being overtaken by Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy on 20 September 2011, by which time The Inbetweeners Movie had grossed £41.8 million overall. The film saw a limited theatrical release in the United States on 7 September 2012, where it grossed $36,000 making its total box office revenue $88,025,781.

Home Media: On 12 December 2011, The Inbetweeners Movie was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in the UK by 4DVD, with the latter version sold as a triple pack containing both formats along with a digital copy of the film. Both versions include a number of special features, such as a making-of documentary, footage from the film's London premiere, various deleted scenes, cast commentaries and a blooper reel.
Following its appearance in UK stores, the DVD quickly became a major financial success. 21 Jump Street:

Although the newly developed film does not follow the story and characters in the original series, it simply takes the concept from it and establishes it with a comedy twist producing a box office smash.

Series Summary: (4)

21 Jump Street is the headquarters for a squad of police officers who specialize in investigations relating to young people. Each of the Jump St. personnel was selected for their ability to pass for high school or college students, allowing them to operate undercover in areas where it is difficult for regular police officers to blend in unnoticed. A Police crime drama provided a spark to Johnny Depp's nascent acting career, garnering him national recognition as a teen idol which he did not like.

Movie Summary:

In 2005, Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) were polar opposites in high school. Schmidt did well in school, but his geekish personality made it hard to him to gain acceptance among his peers. Jenko was a jock with plenty of friends but had poor grades. Seven years later, the duo join the police force and they become friends. The duo finally catch a break when they are assigned to go undercover as high school students and halt the spread of a synthetic drug that many students are getting their hands on and catch the supplier. After their identities are inadvertently mixed up, Schmidt finds himself among the popular kids, including the school's main drug dealer, while Jenko finds himself ostracized and frowned upon by most of the students. Schmidt's attempts to make something of himself leads to a rift with Jenko and threatens to derail the entire operation. Can they get their act together before the synthetic drug spirals out of control?

Series Success:

People Just Do Nothing Movie:

Funnily enough according to this article: https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/news/2336/people_just_do_nothing_film/
BBC are actually planning for a movie featuring Kurupt FM as their final production following after the 5th Series.

Producer Ash Atalla claims "There are different ways to structure a film these days it needn't be a huge cinema release; there's video on demand - some kind of feature length ending to the show feels like the right thing to do." This will supposably be filmed and released in 2019 upon the BBC's approval to keep the show running.
